Donnan wins AFL-CIO backing

The North Carolina AFL-CIO couldn't decide whom to endorse in the governor's race, but the union has made its picks in the rest of the statewide races.

The group endorsed Hampton Dellinger for lieutenant governor. James Andrews, the group's president, said in a statement Dellinger would "help attract and retain good jobs while ensuring fair workplace conditions.”

Other choices (all Democrats) include:

-State Sen. Kay Hagan for the U.S. Senate.

-State Sen. Janet Cowell for state treasurer.

-Superintendent of public instruction June Atkinson to keep her job.

-Beth Wood for auditor.

-Wayne Goodwin for insurance commissioner.

-Mary Fant Donnan for labor commissioner, in one of the most important races for the union.
